Regulatory Agencies in Brazil

In Brazil there are several regulatory agencies that have authority over an industry or profession in addition to the general government regulation. The goal of these agencies is to regulate and supervise a specific industry in Brazil. There are federal agencies, state agencies and municipal agencies. The most important agencies are the federal agencies.

ANATEL – Telecommunications

Anatel, short for Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações in Portuguese, is the National Telecommunications Agency linked to the Ministry of Communication. It is an independent agency and has the power of regulating and supervising telecommunications services. Its mission is to regulate the telecommunication industry to contribute to Brazil’s development.

ANEEL – Electricity

ANEEL, short for Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica in Portuguese, is the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency linked to the Ministry of Mines and Energy.  It is an independent agency that has the power of regulating and supervising the electric power industry.

ANAC, short for Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil in Portuguese, is the Brazilian Civil Aviation Agency linked to the Ministry of Transportation, Ports and Civil Aviation.
